Chinese Wedding Traditions |

(Before the Wedding)

(Proposal / Betrothal Gifts)
The groom’s family brings gifts like tea, wine, money, pastries, and traditional items to the bride’s family to show sincerity. The bride’s family gives a return gift to confirm the engagement.
(Choosing an Auspicious Date)
Families use the Chinese lunar calendar or consult a fortune teller to find a lucky date for the wedding.
(Hair Combing Ceremony)
On the night before the wedding, a respected elder combs the bride and groom’s hair four times, each stroke symbolizing different blessings for a long and happy marriage.

(Wedding Day)

(Door Games)
The groom must pass playful challenges set by the bridesmaids—like doing push-ups, singing, or love declarations—before he can “win” the bride.
(Tea Ceremony)
The couple kneels or bows and offers tea to their parents and elders, who then bless them with red envelopes or jewelry.
(Red Color Theme)
Red symbolizes luck and joy, so it’s used everywhere—from clothes to decorations and invitations.

(Wedding Banquet)

(Lavish Feast)
Banquets include lucky dishes: fish (abundance), shrimp (laughter), noodles (long life), roast pig (purity and completeness).
(Multiple Wedding Outfits)
The bride usually prepares three or more dresses, each with with its own special meaning.
Traditional Chinese dress like a “Qun Kwa” (裙褂) or “Qipao” (旗袍) features embroidery of dragons and phoenixes—perfect for the tea ceremony or early morning rituals.
A Western-style white gown is usually worn during the ceremony or entrance. Long train and veil make the bride look like a fairy-tale princess.
Evening dresses—often gold, red, or jewel tones—are worn during the banquet or for toasts. These are elegant and easier to move in.
(Toasting Tables)
The couple goes table to thank guests and toast. Guests return cheers, give blessings, and hand over red envelopes.
