AUGUST 2025 PRESIDENT’S REPORT

August remains an extremely busy and challenging month for all our volunteers and committee leaders, fully engaged and occupied with our annual Folklorama event. This year‘s Folklorama week will likely become another record-breaking success with several significant changes. Changes occurred in almost every aspect of the event, from our newly created Audio/Lighting crew, visitor greeting, admission, VIP / Bus tour, cultural display, souvenir, calligraphy, photo booth, clean up crew, cultural drinks, and food menu. We have also received two performers who came in from China specifically for this event. One excellent female solo dancer and a special artist who performs the traditional face change performance. The performance from the Great Wall had once again outdone itself in providing our pavilion with a fully packed top-grade cultural entertainment for the entire week. Great job to Gary Liu, all teachers, performers of all age groups, and the fantastic Great Wall team.

A sincere appreciation to our lighting/Audio/Video vendor, what a team in setting up to taking down, and the coaching you have given our new crew. The extended support from our WCCCC office team, regular staff and our summer students, fantastic job, and commitment. Most importantly, the impressive level of volunteer commitment involved 3 generations, average of 120 volunteers per day. Thank you.

More than the above, we thank you for one of our return volunteers (no name mentioned), truly one of our greatest supporters, who has donated not just 7 full days of his summer, but once again donated another $10,000, a substantial donation to WCCCC. We thank you.

Ideas on programming for seniors, intergeneration with our Youth Group and community activities continue. The goal to have multi-generational involvement remains our focus. Many other programs are being scheduled for all age groups to participate. Website: Winnipeg Chinese Cultural and Community Centre – https://wcccc.ca

1. August 2025 activities

  • Kitchen update has been completed and has served this year’s Folklorama more than adequately, and is ready to serve other upcoming new programs.
  • Booking of our Gymnasium continues to grow for basketball groups, table tennis groups and others.
  • Pickle Ball, badminton and volley nets are experiencing a delay at Custom, expecting to arrive in late September.
  • Our lion and dragon dance group has added additional coaches, continues to receive expanded interest; regular practice continues from 12:00noon to 3:00pm every Sunday.
  • Preparation for this year’s Night Market for September 6th and 7th is getting our volunteers very busy, and with excellent vendors’ commitment for both days.
  • A few of the Board of Directors had joined in to organize this year’s Night Market event. This year’s event will be a modified version as we have decided to coexist with another event adjacent to our Centre, organized by Taste of Asia. This will be our new experience as we are to host our portion of this event within the Chinese Garden area and the interior of our Centre. A big test for us.
  • Along with WCCCC in partnership with Manitoba Great Wall, Women of Colour Community and Manitoba Chinese Family Centre, this year’s Newcomers Event will also take place on September 6th, 2025, 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm at St. Vital Park. Everyone is welcome.
  • Following the Night Market event, another bi-annual fund-raising Golden Dragon Gala event is also under planning stage in high gear. We are also making several significant changes to continue providing better results and experience for our supporters. Current progress is promising, likely another record-breaking event. This year’s event will take place on Tuesday, October 28th, 2025, at the south side of the RBC Convention Centre. Any company, organization or individual that is interested in supporting this event, please contact our WCCCC office or website.

Thank you to our many volunteers and recruits who helped WCCCC with planning and volunteering!
